Grass Roots Education
James is very flexible on how he works but he likes to involve the children and adults in some basic ideas that underpin poetry and language. Ideally workshops would combine an actual walk close to the school or along a riverbank or to a historical building.
James has for many years lived and worked in Somerset as a writer and casual farm worker, which gives his words an immediacy which relates at once to the land. Over the years he has given many readings, lectures and poetry workshops.
This outstanding Heritage project has engaged over 120 school children in 5 apple-growing parishes on the Somerset Levels & Moors. The locally based workshop leaders; author James Crowden and artist Kate Lynch inspired the children not only to write original and lively poetry, but also to draw and illustrate their very personal observations of orchards, apples and Cider making. Inspired by the work of Common Ground, it is hoped this project will act as a catalyst for similar initiatives.
